Trees, Cars and Carbon
1. Total Height of the Tree
Enter your own height (in inches) and the distance to the tree (in inches). Add them together to estimate the tree’s total height.
| Your height (inches) | Distance to tree (inches) | Total height (inches) |
|---|---|---|
| ____ | ____ | ____ |
2. Green Weight of Tree
Use the dichotomous key to identify your tree species. Then choose its classification:
- Hard hardwood
- Soft hardwood
- Southern pine
- Southern pine – Piedmont
- Sweetgum
- Yellow poplar
Apply the correct formula (see table below) using tree height (in inches) and circumference (in inches).
3. Dry Weight and Carbon
Take the green weight and multiply by the species factor (see list). Then multiply the dry weight by 0.48 to estimate carbon content.
